Ghost Detector App Wired to a Real Sensor (Just for Fun)
Most of the ghost detector app downloads I tried before making my own had the same problem: the needle was a random number generator wearing a costume. Walk toward a running microwave, walk away from it, stand in a field, the gauge did the same thing every time. Once you noticed, the fun was gone for good, and it took about a minute to notice.
That annoyed me enough to build one where the gauge is wired to something real. Every phone has a magnetometer, the sensor the compass uses, and it genuinely responds to metal, wiring and electronics nearby. So my Ghost Detector reads that sensor live and drives the EMF radar with it. Let me be completely upfront before going further: this is a novelty prop. It is just for fun, it is not real paranormal detection, and there is a line on the home screen that says so at all times. What it is, is a prop that behaves consistently, and that turns out to be the whole difference.

What is actually inside a ghost detector app
Open it and you get one circular gauge, styled after an old field meter, sweeping through green, amber and red. Even at rest it drifts a little, because the phone sensor is never perfectly still. Walk around a room with it and the reading rises near the fridge, the router, the wall behind a socket, and settles again in the middle of the floor. That behaviour is what makes people lean in: it is doing something, and the something is repeatable.
I want to be precise about what is sensor and what is theatre, because I think the honesty is part of the fun rather than a disclaimer to hide. The gauge itself is the real magnetic field reading, normalised so the needle moves in a satisfying range. The final detection percentage and which ghost you "find" blend that reading with randomness so that two scans of the same corner do not give an identical result. Real input, staged output. Nobody is being told anything is haunted.
The scan, the ghost cards, and Ghost Talk
Tap Start Scan and the gauge goes wild for three to five seconds, with a beep that speeds up and vibration that pulses along with it. In a lit room this is mildly amusing. With the lights off and three people crowded around one phone, adults jump. That few seconds is the highlight, and everything else in the app exists to give it a payoff.
The payoff is a card. When the scan ends you see an intensity percentage and reveal one of thirty ghosts, sorted into faint, moderate and strong presences depending on the reading. The faint end is gentle, things like a Wandering Spirit or a Sleepy Guest; the strong end gets an Energetic Poltergeist or a Ruler of the Night. They are written to be more playful than frightening, so this works with kids at a sleepover as well as adults at a campsite.
Then there is Ghost Talk. Pick a question, "Is anyone there?" and the like, and a crackling signal runs for a moment before something that leans toward a yes, a no, or too faint to tell comes back. Again: a made-up effect, and the screen says so. But sitting in a dark room asking questions to a phone is a very specific kind of fun, and the app is honest about being a toy for that.
Every scan is saved to a history screen, a Today's Ghost changes daily on the home screen, and any result can be turned into an image card to share with whoever was not brave enough to come.
The thing I refused to do
The easy version of this app would have dropped the disclaimer, dressed the sensor up as "paranormal energy", and let people believe it. Apps like that exist and some of them do well. I did not want to make one, partly on principle and partly because a prop that lies to you is less fun once you catch it, and you always catch it.
So the entertainment notice stays on screen permanently, the result screen repeats that the reading is made up, and the app asks for no camera, microphone or location permission at all. It works fully offline apart from ads, needs no account, and stores nothing anywhere but your phone. If you are looking for something that claims to detect spirits scientifically, this is not that, and I would be suspicious of anything that says it is.
